Historic Attractions in Moidart, Ardnamurchan, Morvern, Arisaig and Mallaig

Castle Tioram - reflections on the pastImmerse yourself in the history and culture of the Western Highlands, a region associated with clans and aspiring kings, imbued with bravery, loyalty, rebellion and injustice, all played out in an imposing and dramatic landscape.

Moidart and the surrounding areas are steeped in history, as evidenced by its historic castles, townships and monuments.  Feudal systems, subsistence farming and clan histories associated with loyalty and bravery, as well as lawlessness, tyranny, pillage and murder, form the rich historical tapestry of the area.  Moidart has also been the focus of numerous upheavals associated with the Jacobite Uprising, most notably with James Edward Stuart and his son Charles Edward Stewart, the ‘Old’ and ‘Young Pretenders’ respectively.     Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in Moidart in 1745 and raised his standard at Glenfinnan, an ill-fated uprising that eventually ended in defeat at Culloden. Ancient abandoned settlements bears witness to the brutal and widespread Highland Clearances in 18th and 19th Century, and the breakdown of the traditional dependent clan system. More recent changes have led to the opening up of Highlands, brought about by the railway and new roads, with the expansion of the tourist industry.  Today, the area supports many thriving townships and hamlets, proud of its history, traditions and crofting heritage
